Hi all,
My first two weeks in Rio has been jam-packed - on my first day I went to the samba class which was certainly very interesting although I do not think I did it justice! Samba is Brazil’s national dance http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samba which when done by the experts is very mesmerizing. I can’t wait for the carnival next year when I can see it in its full glory.
In my first week, I also undertook a five day immersion course in Portuguese. For those who know me well, I sometimes find it hard to pronounce certain words in English so I was very worried about learning a new language! The course consisted of one on one tuition where the teacher would only speak Portuguese – very tough but rewarding due to some great teachers. Rich was in another class (more advanced as he already knows some of the language) but we both were taken to lunch every day in which we discover a really cool cafe called Besi. Besi is located in Centro – the old part of Rio and is located at the back of a kitchenware shop. It does amazing chicken pies (torte de frango) as well as a salad of figs and ham – not very brazilian I know but still very tasty!
